Software Frameworks Redesign : Adobe

PROBLEM:

Adobe's large suite of applications were built and acquired over many years. Many were built on different code bases and had different UIs. This led to an inconsistent brand experience across applications, as well as creating a huge maintenance headache. In addition, as the growth of the touch device market continued, it was obvious the dated UIs were unwieldy in tablets and phones.

SOLUTION:

Developed a modular solution, where UI modules could be combined to create a framework for any of our applications. Key goal was to reduce and simplify the historically overwhelming UI systems, making them easier to parse as well as more touch friendly in small form factors.

MY ROLE:

Lead designer on small team with a design manager who led strategy and approach. Developed all concepts, refined them, and tested final approach by conducting a few rounds of usability testing with Adobe users. Collaborated with a lead researcher to create and structure the test, as well as run many of the sessions.

Before we began, a study was done of all the applications that lived within Adobe's parent umbrella. Different UIs, code bases, interaction patterns, and visual aesthetic are all visible below.

Realizing a project of this size was difficult to tackle all at once, we took an approach in which we identified and pulled out the major areas of the UI in key applications, and took at how to simplify the experience in each of these areas. The samples below shows explorations into reimagining Premiere's timeline functionality and visuals.

As we refined the style, our team applied the style and patterns developed in the modules to many of the Adobe applications in a full scale study on the new framework. It was important to see whether the modules held up when utilized in the myriad of different environments. The study showed that the streamlined design aesthetic, modular approach, and 'just in time' UI were exactly what was needed to unite our family of apps.
